ChatGPT Roasts Your IG Feed
A new viral trend has emerged over the past week, but before you participate, make sure you’ve got some thick skin.
“Here's a screenshot of my Instagram profile and feed. Can you roast it for me? Be brutally honest.” It’s a question that’s been posed to ChatGPT by over 400,000 Instagram users as of Wednesday morning. Users are taking screenshots of their Instagram profile, uploading the photo to ChatGPT and waiting for the AI giant to give it to them straight… and the platform is not holding back.
From backhanded compliments ....”The martini duo shot is cute, but we all know you spent more time arranging the glasses than actually drinking. Two drinks—one staged moment for the ‘gram.”
To downright brutal… “Wearing sunglasses at night—how edgy! Or maybe you’re just hiding the fact that you’re dead inside after realizing your life peaked at that last Instagrammable meal.”
And we won’t even post the responses that happen when you give the next prompt “be meaner.”
This isn’t the first time AI has played a big role in a social trend. In late 2022, users prompted AI to generate avatars of themselves in different and unique styles and scenarios, some even using the generated photos as their LinkedIn headshots. In 2023, we saw uproar as deep fake AI voices from notable figures like Obama swarmed TikTok.
While many are dying to know what the “objective” ChatGPT has to say about their profile, there’s a few things to remember before you get roasted by a robot:
- AI learns from the data it’s been trained on, which means it can inadvertently reinforce stereotypes and biases. When roasting your feed, ChatGPT might resort to clichés and assumptions based on what it "thinks" your content represents.
- AI servers like ChatGPT, lack the emotional intelligence and context that a human reviewer would have. It doesn’t understand the deeper meaning behind a post, the personal stories or inside jokes that accompany each image, or the cultural nuances that might be at play. A great alt: ask your sibling or BFF to “roast” you.
